6 Ways to Prevent Your Kids’ Addiction to Fortnite

Fortnite could be the hottest game on the planet right now, but that depends on what side of the world you are on. If you are a kid who enjoys lounging around with the game for several hours on end every day, then you would think the same too.

If you are, rather, a concerned parent who is finding it harder to separate their kid from the game by the day, this piece is for you.


Why should you control Fortnite addiction?

Before we go further, it should be known that this is not a piece meant to attack Fortnite in any way. The gameplay is great, and many people agree to that, but addiction to any video game at all should not be condoned.

From all around the world, there has been a lot of extremist behaviors displayed by kids playing this game. One of such cases profiles a boy who stole his mother’s credit card just to make in-game purchases.

We are sure there are tons more like that.

Yet another one is of a girl who preferred to wet herself so as not to miss any minute of gameplay. In fact, she attacked her parents when they did take the game away from her.

Whether or not your kid has reached such stages is not what we are here to discuss. We are much more interested in making sure they lose that addiction before it causes further damage.


Fighting the Addiction

There are a lot of ways to help your child out of this situation. You must have tried some things in the past that didn’t work. On the other hand, it could be your first time to attempt this too.

Whichever side of the spectrum you fall on, there is a high chance you find something that works for you here.


1 Step In

Many parents have the mindset that their kids should be held responsible for their own actions. While that is true, a little bit of guidance from time to time never hurts anybody. That is why you should step in to help them achieve better time management.

While this does not mean you are taking away the game from them completely, you will be limiting their video game time to what you consider a healthy indulgence.


2 Be Interested

A common mistake is to berate your kids at the games they play, especially telling them how much of a waste of potential it is. In fact, this could backfire so much when your kids decide to spite you by continuing their increased hours of gameplay.

A simple way to get out of this bind is to show genuine interest in what they are doing. Have a sit down with them to see what’s so interesting about the game. Talk to them and hear their standpoint, as well as what the game means to them.

Above all, be genuine in your approach.

If you can bond that much via the game, it would be easier for them to listen to whatever you might have to say to them about their addiction later on.


3 Create a Social Presence

Have you ever stopped to consider the fact that your kids didn’t know their online friends aren’t their real friends? Of course, that is the truth, but do they know it? Probably not.

Now, the worst thing you could do is to face them and spit that out. You really don’t want to do that.

Instead, help them make new friends. This is not a toast to forcing friendships, but helping them find their feet in the real world. If they can start seeing that there are things to discuss outside of gaming, and more quality relationships to be enjoyed outside the home, that could as well be a turning point for them.


4 Create A Detox Process

Detox is the process of removing toxins from the body: and a game detox works in just the same way. Let your kids know your concerns and tell them that you will be making some changes around the house.

Let them know you are not punishing them for anything but helping them. It doesn’t matter if they are in total agreement with you, but respecting them enough to have this talk with them will mean a lot.

Afterwards, proceed to taking away their access to the game little by little. A drastic change will upset your kid and could cause them to get violent, or even find ways to circumvent your authority. By doing it slowly, you ease them into the process.

Besides that, make sure you find something else to fill the void that you would be creating. You know your kid’s interests better, and those would be a good place to work from.



5 Make Gaming A Reward

If your kid loves gaming already, there is a high chance they would be taken with the idea of a rewards-based program early on. After letting them know of your concerns towards their gaming practices, tell them that you are not interested in cutting off their fun completely. At this point, introduce something of a plan that they could achieve to get some more game time.

A common mistake here is to limit what your kid could do for a reward to mere chores. That could come back to be counterproductive.

Rather, use this opportunity to help them. This, you can do by encouraging them to make new friends, join a team, do their homework, come home with better grades and so much more. In short, plan the program around things that will help them grow as a person.


6 Speak to A Therapist

Sometimes, you just have to accept that the matter could be out of your hands. Trying to force things to happen could only harden your kid’s mind, so don’t go down that lane.

It might just be time to talk to a specialist and have them work with your kid. Chances are they have dealt with a ton of such cases before and know how to make things better.
