This is exactly where the role of Parental Control kicks in.

The messaging apps are quickly taking over our world and competing for our attention. Your kids too will start using them at some point in their lives. Therefore, you should amp up your knowledge on how to deal with your kids’ online safety. In this post, you will learn about WhatsApp Parental Control and how you can use it to full effect. So, stay with us till the very end! Let’s get started.

WhatsApp is an online messaging application owned by the social media giant, Facebook. It currently owns two other messaging platforms – Instagram and Facebook Messenger. The application allows users to interact with each other using text, voice, images, and videos. Not just that, you can even transfer files over WhatsApp. To use WhatsApp, you have to provide your personal or business phone number and agree to its terms and conditions, the most important of which is the age limit. Your kids have to be over the age of 16 to use WhatsApp.

WhatsApp Fun Facts!

  • WhatsApp currently has over 2 billion worldwide users!
  • It is banned in 12 countries around the globe!
  • More than 100 billion messages are shared on WhatsApp every day!
  • WhatsApp was the most downloaded app of 2019 – 850 million downloads!

Here’s a breakdown of WhatsApp visits by different generations that access the application:

  • Generation Z: 51%
  • Millennials: 54%
  • Generation X: 48%
  • Baby Boomers: 46%

As you can see, WhatsApp is very popular among kids. So, why do they like this messaging app so much? Well, the foremost reason is that WhatsApp is free to use. It allows them to send and receive infinite messages (texts, pictures, videos, voice) anytime they want. Kids can create their own WhatsApp Groups and have secret conversations. They can put interesting pictures on their profiles and even set their status.

Not just that, they can even call each other over WhatsApp. Kids can use the voice and video call features and even add multiple people over the call to make it more interesting. The features are so good even we (adults) can’t resist the temptation! These features even help businesses to function efficiently. So, all in all, it is a complete messaging platform one can ever have. AND IT’S FREE FOR BUSINESSES TOO!

WhatsApp has distinct end-to-end encryption that keeps the conversation on the application extremely safe. The conversations cannot be intercepted or read or listened to by any third-party. However, you can share any kind of text, images, or videos on the platform. This is highly dangerous for your kids.

Cyberbullying or online abuse is very much common on WhatsApp if the users come in contact with a stranger on WhatsApp. Also, the feature that allows users to send and delete messages after a certain amount of time can be used for malicious intentions.

Parents will need to ensure they follow the parental control methods mentioned in the post and have an honest conversation with their kids about the possibilities of cyberbullying on WhatsApp. We highly recommend parents educate their children about cyberbullying and cybercrimes to ensure that the kids access the internet with utmost care.

There are four different ways to safeguard your kid’s session on WhatsApp. Here we will help you understand and execute WhatsApp Parental Control methods in order. Let’s get started.

1.   Block other people

Tap on ‘Settings’ in the bottom-right corner of the app and then go to ‘Account’. Now tap on ‘Privacy’ to access ‘Blocked’ contacts. You will be able to see a list of people that your kid can no longer connect with on WhatsApp. Add more people to the list if you want.

2.   Turn off visible public information

Tap on ‘Settings’, then ‘Account’, and then ‘Privacy’ to regulate settings that allow your kid’s profile information to go public. Here, you will be able to change information related to Last Seen, Profile Photo, About, and Status.

3.   Turn off Live Location

Live location sharing can make your kids vulnerable to anti-social elements trying to access their personal information. You must turn it off by going to ‘Settings’, then ‘Account’, then ‘Privacy’, and finally tap on ‘Live Location’. Now select the chats/profiles you don’t want to share your location with.

4.   Report issues to WhatsApp

Lastly, if you find anything odd on WhatsApp, feel free to let their team know. Just go to ‘Settings’ and tap on ‘Help’. Now tap on ‘Contact Us’ to send a message regarding the issue you or your kids are facing on WhatsApp.
