What is Safer Internet Day 2020?

The internet has succeeded in making the world a truly global village. That has ensured anyone and everyone from all parts of the world can reach one another in the blink of an eye. It has also increased our access to information, among other things.

For all these goodies, though, the internet is not without its own problems.

That is why an initiative like Safer Internet Day (SID) was created – and it has been running for more than ten (10) years now.

What is Safer Internet Day (SID)?

Safer Internet Day started back in the year 2004, and it has always been aimed at making the internet a safe place for users of all ages.

While there are always topics broaching the subjects of how adults could fall to the abuse and misuse of the internet, the main focus of the event is making the internet a better place for the younger ones. Afterall, they’re the ones who will grow into the next set of older generation – making it possible to start a cycle of change from them that will spiral into the generation coming after them.

Although the event started in Europe, it has now become a landmark event celebrated every year in over 140 countries of the world. Usually celebrated on the same day, the initiative encourages the different celebrants from all around the world to deal with emerging issues in the online world in their countries.

For example, the 2019 event was globally tagged ‘Together for a Better Internet,’ and it focused on online scams in Australia.

This is a part of the world where some estimated $45 million was lost to internet fraud in the year 2018 alone. That makes it important for them to put out resources which will ensure online users are informed against how these scams can come to be, and what should be done against them too.

For the Children

Like we said earlier, SID is specially crafted in a way that makes it suitable for children to be a part of the proceedings too. This is very important due to the frightening statistics that are starting to emerge around issues such as cyberbullying.

With awareness, the problem can be recognized and nipped in the bud before it becomes a bigger global phenomenon at all.

To corroborate that, even UNICEF got on the train of asking for a better internet for kids which would be devoid of cyberbullying. Describing the internet as ‘a kindness desert,’ it has become even more important for the world to rally around changing that narrative.

Safer Internet Day 2020

The events for the next year are already shaping up to happen, and we cannot wait for it to headline in even more countries of the world. Following the success of SID for this year, the next year’s event will retain the slogan ‘Together for a Better Internet.’

The event will kick off in the 11th of February, 2020, which happens to be a Tuesday.

Like every other event under this program, different countries will have different ways of interpreting the theme. That will most likely be informed by the current internet problems realized in each of these countries, as well as the global focus towards safety on the internet.

Getting Involved

The great thing about this program is that you can also get involved in making the internet a better place for yourself, your kids (if you jave ay) and the younger/ coming generation too.

Check out the official website of the Safer Internet Day program to see if your country/ region is listed already so that you can start working with the organizers in your country to make the next event a success. Otherwise, you could submit an application that will see the event come to your country too.
